Case Study: The DeepSeek Moment

In January 2025, DeepSeek R1, from a Chinese startup, matched OpenAI’s best reasoning model on key benchmarks. Nvidia lost ~$600 billion in market cap in a single day.

Let’s consider what happened and why.

What made it notable:

  • Trained for under $6 million (vs. billions for US frontier models)
  • Used restricted H800 chips, not top-of-the-line Nvidia H100s
  • Released fully open-weight — anyone could download and run it
  • Proved reasoning capability doesn’t require massive proprietary budgets

This story touches on numerous class themes: technical, sociotechnical, and geopolitical.

Dig deeper:

  • What’s distillation? What’s reinforcement learning? What’s RLHF? What’s Mixture of Experts (MoE)?
  • Does this recontextualize The Bitter Lesson?
  • Was the cost truly that much less than US models? What does “training cost” even include?
  • Policy: geopolitical implications; chip export bans; open access vs. national security

What actually happened (retrospective):

  • US companies responded with more efficient models and open-weight releases
  • Efficiency improved across the board — the “compute moat” narrative took significant damage
  • US frontier models (GPT-5, Claude 4) continue to lead on benchmarks
  • Chinese open-source models (Qwen 2.5) now surpass Meta’s Llama in downloads

The “end of US AI dominance” didn’t happen — but the assumption that scale = moat definitely got challenged.

AI Effect

The “AI Effect” refers to how achievements in AI are often discounted as not being “real” intelligence once they become well understood.

Larry Tesler: “Intelligence is whatever machines haven’t done yet”

Rodney Brooks: “Every time we figure out a piece of it, it stops being magical; we say, ‘Oh, that’s just a computation.’” (Wired, 2002)


Is AI Creative?

  • Yes, by common definitions and tests of divergent thinking, it’s able to show creativity
  • But… maybe the definitions are too narrow?
  • And is this question the interesting one? Does it have to be creative agnostic of us?

  • AI can enhance individual originality but reduces collective diversity (Doshi & Hauser, 2024, Science Advances); other studies show it increases flexibility and lowers originality
  • Tough to measure, because it’s so implementation-dependent

When AI-Confidence Replaces Self-Confidence

Lee et al. (CHI 2025) surveyed knowledge workers, collecting 936 first-hand examples of GenAI use at real work tasks.

  • Higher confidence in the AI → less critical thinking
  • Higher confidence in yourself → more critical thinking
  • AI shifts the work away from gathering and problem-solving → toward verification, integration, and task stewardship

So, there’s a lot of work to do, but it’s also being applied in practice everyday

A few early insights:

  • Implementation matters, and how the human applies the tool in the interest of creativity
  • Over-reliance is a concern
  • Different types of creativity are differentially supported (e.g. mini-c, little-c, Pro-c, big-C)
  • Systems are great at fluency (how many) and elaboration (how detailed) - this can be a good starting point for humans reflecting on ideas for a problem
  • Systems can be nudged to be more creative
  • Measuring co-creativity is difficult, because the human contribution (in selection, interaction, application, etc.) is often latent

Giving your bot a voice and a directive


Context

  • Instruction-tuned models are typically trained to recognized three ‘voices’:
    • System: The system’s voice, which is the meta instructions
    • User: The user’s voice, which is the voice of the person using the model.
    • Assistant: The model’s voice, which is the voice of the model.

Not all interfaces make it possible (or easy) to change the system voice, but you can also use your first user message to give instructions

Upcoming Lab: Prompt & Circumstance

Design a self-contained interactive experience (game, tool, or interface) that lives entirely within a single AI prompt. The experience should activate when a user types ‘START’ and maintain its designed behavior throughout the interaction.

Some examples to model this.


A newer paradigm: Skills, and File Context

Instead of stuffing everything into one system prompt, Skills are modular folders (SKILL.md + resource files + scripts) that Claude loads on demand.

  • Launched October 2025; open specification
  • This aligns with emerging directory-based ‘agents’ that we’ll talk about in two week.
  • You (or your org) can author your own — a folder of instructions + reference docs
  • Portable across a growing number of AI tools.
